Bottom Line: The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) concludes that the current evidence is insufficient to make a recommendation about screening for impaired visual acuity in older adults. This recommendation applies to asymptomatic adults age 65 or older who present in primary care without known impaired visual acuity and are not seeking care for vision problems. Impairment of visual acuity is a serious public health problem in older adults. The number of adults age 60 years or older with impaired visual acuity (defined as best corrected visual acuity worse than 20/40 but better than 20/200) was estimated at 2.9 million in 2015. The USPSTF routinely makes recommendations about the effectiveness of preventive care services, and this recommendation concurs with its 2016 statement on screening for impaired visual acuity in older adults.
