Extracellular Vesicles and exosomes, membrane-bound vesicles secreted by cells into the extracellular space, are now known as major players in cellular communication. They are currently the center of attention in health and medicine as they show potential in treating many diseases, due to their implication in intercellular exchange of proteins, lipids, and genetic material.

Among the hot topics where exosomes will be highlighted: Mitochondria, Skin Ageing, Microbiota, and Polyphenols.

Extracellular Vesicles & Mitochondria: The Target

The 13th World Congress on Targeting Mitochondria 2022 will dedicate a specialized session on Extracellular Vesicles & Mitochondria. The meeting will take place at the Steigenberger Hotel Am Kanzleramt, Berlin, Germany & Online on October 26-28.

The role of extracellular vesicles in mitochondrial quality control, the involvement of mitochondria carrying extracellular vesicles in various diseases, and the therapeutic potential of mitochondrial extracellular vesicles in mitochondrial dysfunctions will be highlighted.

Among the talks that will be presented in this session:

EV-Mitochondria as a Promising Therapeutic for Mitochondrial Dysfunction - Devika S Manickam, Duquesne University, USA

The Role of Extracellular Vesicles in Mitochondrial Quality Control Mechanisms - Marc Germain, Université du Québec à Trois-Rivières, Canada

Mitochondria in Extracellular Vesicles and Aging - Nicole Noren Hooten, NIH, USA

The Impact of Mesenchymal Stromal Cell Extracellular Vesicles on Mitochondrial Dysfunction in Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome - Anna Krasnodembskaya, Queen's University Belfast, United Kingdom

Mitochondrial, Exosomal miR137-COX6A2 in Schizophrenia - Ines Khadimallah, Lausanne University Hospital, Switzerland

Extracellular Vesicles & Skin Ageing: The Points of View

Extracellular vesicles and their integration within the skin science will be presented during the 13th Annual Meeting on Skin Ageing & Challenges 2022 which will take place on November 17-18 at the University of Lisbon, Faculty of Pharmacy, Lisboa, Portugal and Online.

International experts in the field will present their latest research, and introduce the most recent advances and discoveries incorporating extracellular vesicles and exosomes in skin care. Professional researchers will present outlooks on the use of extracellular vesicles for skin. They will also highlight their perspectives on extracellular vesicles as theranostic tools for skin diseases, ageing, and injuries.

Extracellular Vesicles & Polyphenols: A new Revolution?

The 15th World Congress on Polyphenols Applications 2022, organized in Valencia, Spain on September 28-30, will introduce a new strategic topic involving Extracellular Vesicles & Polyphenols.

Ramaroson Andriantsitohaina, University of Montpellier, France, will review the novel aspects of the interplay between polyphenols and EVs and its potential health benefits in cancer, cardiovascular, metabolic and neurodegenerative diseases. He will explain how he was recently the first to prove that polyphenols can act on signaling pathways that interfere with the EVs biogenesis (release and content), and are thus able to control cells' functional properties.

Gut Microbiota-Derived Extracellular Vesicles

The 9th ISM annual meeting on Targeting Microbiota 2022, which will be held on October 19-21 at the Sorbonne University in Paris, France & online, will have a specialized talk concerning the impact of Gut Microbiota-Derived Extracellular Vesicles on obesity, diabetes and metabolism.

Fermin I. Milagro, University of Navarra, Spain, will highlight the role of these types of EVs as mediators in the gut microbiota-host communication. EV derived from gut microbiota and probiotic bacteria contain a myriad of bioactive molecules (including proteins, microRNAs, and lipids) that could modulate important biological functions with overall impact on host health, serving as potential therapies for these diseases.

Call for innovations

All teams working in the extracellular vesicles field are invited to share their research and innovation in the related conference:

About the International Society of Microbiota (ISM):

ISM was born in 2013 after the transformation of the Task Force Mitochondria-Microbiota to a larger group gathering all actors and experts working in the field of microbiota. The idea is to bring a new level of thinking and understanding of microbiota science out of the classical existing point of view. The science of gut and microbiota is a dynamic field, with a huge evolution and affected by multi factors. ISM will bring this new dynamic point of view to accelerate the credible translation of this science into real benefit for the consumer. ISM also encourages the communication and interaction among researchers, physicians, nutritionists, industrials, food technology and strategic marketing managers through a global microbiota network, especially during its annual world meeting.

About the World Mitochondria Society (WMS):

The World Mitochondria Society emerged seamlessly out of a series of yearly conferences organized since 2010 by the International Society of Antioxidants in Nutrition and Health. The current president of the WMS is Volkmar Weissig, Midwestern University, College of Pharmacy Glendale, USA.
