The percentage of adolescents reporting substance use decreased significantly in 2021, according to the latest results from the Monitoring the Future survey of substance use behaviors and related attitudes among eighth, 10th, and 12th graders in the United States. In line with continued long-term declines in the use of many illicit substances among adolescents previously reported by the Monitoring the Future survey, these findings represent the largest one-year decrease in overall illicit drug use reported since the survey began in 1975. The Monitoring the Future survey is conducted by researchers at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, and funded by the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), part of the National Institutes of Health.

The router in your home might be intercepting some of your Internet traffic and sending it to a different destination. Specifically, the router can intercept the Domain Name System traffic --the communications used to translate human-readable domain names (for example www.google.com) into the numeric Internet Protocol (IP) addresses that the Internet relies on. That’s the finding from a team of computer scientists at the University of California San Diego, which they presented at the Internet Measurement Conference on Nov. 3, 2021.
Bisphenol A is a chemical compound used as a source substance for polycarbonate plastics and epoxy resins. The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) has re-evaluated potential health risks associated with bisphenol A and made the outcome publicly available for comment on 15 December 2021. The German Federal Institute for Risk Assessment (BfR) will comment on EFSA's statement after a comprehensive review.
A research group from the University of Helsinki has built artificial intelligence models that can automatically detect, normalize and generate Finnish dialects.
A research group has shown that fast switching down to 3.5 ns in sub-five-nm ultra-small magnetic tunnel junctions can be achieved by engineering relaxation time. The new technology is expected to lead to the replacement of high-speed DRAM with spintronic non-volatile memory.

As major holidays and the promise of a new year approach, a new poll of people over 50 shows that most of them are finding joy and staying resilient amid the pandemic. But a sizable minority are feeling a lot of stress, especially those who said their overall physical or mental health is fair or poor and those with the lowest incomes.
Pandemic Causes Americans to Take Harsher View of U.S. Healthcare System
The low level of Covid-19 vaccination in the Global South is ethically unacceptable and risks prolonging the pandemic. The patent waiver in discussion since 2020 within the World Trade Organization (WTO) will not solve these vaccination bottlenecks in the short-term. Instead, additional measures should be adopted to accelerate local manufacturing and distribution of vaccines in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), ramp up investment in vaccination campaigns, and facilitate the compulsory licensing of patents and transfer of know-how.
