The Shanghai Ranking Consultancy has released the latest edition of its university ranking by subject. Published June 26, the Shanghai Ranking of Academic Subjects 2019 for the first time lists the Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology at No. 151-200 for physics. The Institute also placed at No. 401-500 for mathematics, and materials science and engineering.

Vitaly Bagan, the Institute's vice rector for fundamental science and development, commented: "This is not the first year that QS and THE rank MIPT among the best 100 universities for physics. The Shanghai Ranking is more conservative but here, too, a positive dynamic is evident."

"MIPT climbs the physics rankings by emphasizing cutting-edge research and attracting talented researchers," the vice rector went on. "Over the past five years, we have established 54 labs at MIPT jointly with leading academic institutions, research centers, and industry partners. This has enabled a return of more than 50 scientists from the world's top research institutes to Russia."

The Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU), also known as the Shanghai Ranking, is one of the most prestigious academic league tables globally. Compiled and published by the Shanghai Ranking Consultancy, the ARWU standings are an important performance indicator for the Russian universities competing under the national academic excellence program known as Project 5-100. In 2018, MIPT made it into the Shanghai Ranking for the first time, at No. 401-500.
