ARLINGTON, Va. (March 2, 2021) -- The Society for Healthcare Epidemiology of America (SHEA) has named Gonzalo Bearman, MD, MPH, chair of the Division of Infectious Diseases at the Virginia Commonwealth University School of Medicine, the inaugural editor-in-chief of its new journal, Antimicrobial Stewardship & Healthcare Epidemiology (ASHE).

"Dr. Bearman was chosen from a large field of highly qualified candidates because of his energy and commitment to advancing the field of antimicrobial stewardship through innovation and strong research," said Mary Hayden, MD, president of the SHEA Board of Trustees, who was a member of the search committee.

ASHE will be the companion journal to SHEA's Infection Control & Hospital Epidemiology (ICHE), published in partnership with Cambridge University press, when it launches March 12. This new journal will be fully Gold Open Access and invite submissions of original investigations that will contribute to the fields of antimicrobial stewardship and the prevention of healthcare-associated infections, as well as other areas of quality improvement affecting health systems, with the ultimate goal of improving healthcare safety.

"Our primary goal in the next year is to establish a top-level editorial team to review and seek the highest quality original research, reviews, commentaries and diversity of views and representation in our field," said Bearman. "Ultimately, we aim to build ASHE to be the premier and most innovative open access journal in the fields of infection prevention, healthcare epidemiology, and antimicrobial stewardship to promote safe healthcare for all. With the SHEA and Cambridge teams, we have set clear goals in terms of the number and diversity of submissions, a rapid time to first decision, and the reach of our articles."

ASHE will begin accepting submissions on March 12, including original research, review articles, practical perspectives, and education-focused manuscripts. It will welcome submissions on broad areas of interest, including infection prevention, antimicrobial stewardship, healthcare epidemiology, diagnostic stewardship, healthcare worker vaccination, public health policy, and occupational health concerns including blood-borne pathogen exposure prevention.

Bearman will serve a five-year term as editor-in-chief beginning this month and ending Dec. 31, 2025, with the possibility of one additional five-year term with the mutual agreement between the editor and the SHEA Board of Trustees.
