An NIH-funded scientific team has shown that a new brain-computer interface (BCI) can allow people with vocal tract and bodily paralysis to convey both speech and upper-body gestures simultaneously. While BCIs have facilitated one or the other in the past, this new system is the first to enable both modes of communication at once, more closely replicating natural expression.
An NIH-funded study has shown that the GLP-1 drug semaglutide extended lifespan in older, healthy mice by tempering the detrimental effects of aging. Researchers directly compared the effects of the treatment to those of reduced food intake, finding that the drug mimicked the anti-aging benefits of calorie restriction, conferring even greater benefits in some areas.
A National Institutes of Health (NIH)-funded scientific team has shown that under the right circumstances, 3D cell culture models of human brain tissue, known as organoids, can express features of later stage brain development. This breakthrough could turn previously unattainable, long-term, benchtop studies of neurodevelopmental disorders into a reality.
A research project funded by NIH has generated one of the most extensive and diverse collections of patient-derived tumor models. Tumor tissue from hundreds of cancer patients contributed to the compendium of tumor models that will enhance the study of tumor biology and be an asset in accelerating the development of cancer therapies while guiding future research directions.
