To understand how the ancestor of today's glycopeptide antibiotics—such as vancomycin, ristomycin and teicoplanin—might have looked like, the researchers used a combination of bioinformatics, genetic and biochemical methods to bring the putative ancestral antibiotic "paleomycin" or "Frankenstein molecule" to life.
