Electron microscope image of synapse in the cerebellum (IMAGE)
Caption
Electron microscope image of synapse in the cerebellum. This slice through the cerebellum cells shows the synapse between an inhibitory neuron (red) and a Purkinje cell (yellow). There, the tiny bubbles storing the neurotransmitters are visible. When the synapse fires, the bubbles bind to the cell membrane to release the transmitters onto the Purkinje cell.
