叶绿素可对海洋混合层的温度产生直接影响和对上层海洋层结及混合强度产生的间接影响，两者的相对强弱决定了海表温度的变化方向。年际尺度和TIW引起的叶绿素扰动通过影响上述过程，分别倾向于减弱和增强ENSO的振幅。
