ミナミトビハゼは６種類のヒレを持ち、泳ぐ、掘る、歩く、求愛行動などの際にこれらのヒレを使う。陸上の移動では、胸ビレが最も重要だが、腹ビレと尾ビレも、魚を前方に推進させる上で重要な役割を果たす。
