Left: For a given number of regions (here 2 regions), the model tests all possible positions of region boundaries as represented by the dotted orange line and will retain the one that best fits the data. Right: The algorithm repeats the process of testing all combinations of region boundaries for increasingly more complex models (with higher number of regions) and will retain the best one, returning the optimal number of regions and their position.
