Marianna Boccia examines Solanum nigrum plants in the greenhouse. This wild plant, which is related to the potato and tomato, produces different steroidal molecules in different tissues. While steroidal saponins are formed in the leaves, glycoalkaloids are produced in the berries. The GAME15 protein interacts with other enzymes involved in biosynthesis to produce both steroidal saponins and steroidal glycoalkaloids.
