The researchers used a 3D Helmholtz coil to manipulate the magnetic field during their field experiments in Greece. The coil was placed above the nest entrance. Ants could enter the experimental platform above the nest via a tube. Individuals coming out for the via were filmed with a camcorder to record their learning walks.
