Deep Maniot landscape

The Deep Maniot landscape is dotted with tower houses, such as those in the village of Vatheia, shown here. These towers served both as fortified structures and as living spaces, each belonging to a particular clan. The new study was able to trace the origins of certain clan founders to the 14th century.
