Lidar renderings of three different areas of the forest studied by the team. Left: a dense, untreated forest stand. Center: a medium-density thinned stand with tree clumps and gaps. Right: a dense stand with a canopy gap. Where thinning treatments produced more canopy gaps, as in the righthand image, the research team found that more snowpack was retained.
