Schematic representation of the DNA-based needle structure. Antibodies on the structure bind to HER2 receptors on the cell surface, after which cholesterol molecules help the needle insert into the cell membrane. Inside the cytoplasm, the bond linking the dye payload is cleaved by glutathione, releasing the dye, while a second dye attached to the base of the needle makes it possible to track the DNA structure itself.
