Fused silk fibers heat-pressed under different conditions (IMAGE)
Caption
Magnified images of fused silk at different conditions of heat pressing. Left: 4,900 atmospheres and 203 degrees Fahrenheit, Right: 9,800 atmospheres and 311 degrees Fahrenheit. The latter exhibits characteristics of greater strength and impact resistance due to more extensive fusion of fibers and efficient transfer of physical stresses.
