Numbers of scintillation vs. Cherenkov photons detected by the SiPMs in the dual-readout EMC for γ and neutrons from GEANT-4 simulations. (IMAGE)
Caption
By simultaneously detecting scintillation photons in plastic scintillator layers and Cherenkov photons in lead glass layers, good γ and neutron separation can be achieved with the dual-readout EMC. This is because most particles in a hadronic shower with a ∼GeV energy do not have enough velocity to generate Cherenkov light, while electrons in an electromagnetic shower can easily produce Cherenkov light due to their sub-MeV/c2 mass.
