Three-dimensional dive path (IMAGE)
Caption
Left: A breeding Adélie penguin walking across Antarctic sea ice.
Right: A three-dimensional underwater dive path reconstructed from data collected by a multi-channel logger attached to a breeding Adélie penguin. Red circles indicate krill feeding events identified from acceleration data and validated by animal-borne video, while black and white circles mark the start and end of each dive, respectively. Penguins typically traveled tens of meters beneath the ice before returning to the same sea-ice opening, allowing repeated dives into the same under-ice foraging area.
