Crystal structure of CeTe₃

CeTe₃ is a layered quantum material. Each layer consists of two conducting tellurium square-net layers (gold) that sandwich a central layer containing tellurium and cerium atoms (blue). Electrons in the tellurium layers are highly mobile, while electrons associated with each of the cerium atoms remain localized. These localized electrons behave like tiny magnets, producing small magnetic moments (one example shown by the red arrow).
