Video explainer for artificial hibernation and memory (VIDEO)
Caption
The core findings of the paper are summarized in this video explainer. When an animal acquires memory, a dedicated network of brain cells undergoes changes at their synapses. To identify the key synapses essential for memory, researchers introduced artificial hibernation in the mouse. Under hibernation, many synapses disappear in the brain. Yet, the animal retains memory. This functional downscaling of the brain connections allowed the researchers to identify the key structural essentials for memory.
