Back-trajectories for 28 July indicate that the air masses in which the smoke layers were detected were over the forest fire area near Bordeaux the previous night (approximately 15 hours earlier, i.e., 08:00 CEST) and near fires in central Spain approximately 24 hours earlier. It therefore stands to reason that the smoke particles measured by the lidar originate from these fires in France and/or Spain. What is unusual here is the high altitude of the smoke layers, at 10–11 km near the tropopause.
