Barred owl perched in mature closed-canopy forest, northwestern California (IMAGE)
Caption
A barred owl (Strix varia) perches beneath closed canopy in northwestern California. GPS tracking of 56 individuals showed that this invasive congener selects forest with high canopy cover, tall stands, large-diameter trees, and diverse tree sizes—the structural signature of mature forest and the same conditions northern spotted owls require for nesting and roosting.
