Restoring hormone function after pituitary loss (IMAGE)
Caption
Researchers grew pituitary tissue from human stem cells and transplanted it in mice and a monkey with surgically removed pituitary glands. The tissue produced ACTH for over six months in mice and six weeks in the monkey. In mice, the transplant extended lifespan, and in the monkey, it slowed weight loss caused by the hormone deficiency.
