Oxygen-Rich Magma Releases Oxygen as It Rises from Deep Earth (IMAGE)
Caption
Schematic cross-section of Earth’s mantle. Magma formed in a deep, oxygen-rich region of the mantle carries excess oxygen upward. As the magma rises and pressure drops, excess oxygen is released (blue dots), which could oxidize the shallow mantle, the crust and the atmosphere. LIP: large igneous province; ULVZ: ultra-low velocity zone.
