Saul Perlmutter, professor of physics and recipient of the 2011 Nobel Prize in Physics for the discovery of an accelerating expansion of the universe. Shortly after that discovery, he proposed a space telescope to help explain this acceleration and its proposed cause: dark energy. That proposal morphed into the Roman Space Telescope, which is devoted to cosmology and exoplanet research.
