Synthesis route of an all-benzene catenane (top) and knot (details). First, the chlorine atoms (Cl) parts were reacted through a reaction with nickel to form carbon-carbon bonds. After that, the silicon atoms were removed by using fluorine, and then the crimped parts (OR) were removed through a reaction with sodium to convert into benzene rings.
