Phylogeny and temporal distribution of early jawed vertebrates in Silurian- Devonian interval (IMAGE)
Caption
The crown Rhipidistia mainly includes lungfishes and tetrapods to the exclusion of coelacanths. The Chinese sarcopterygians show that the origin and rapid diversification of the group mainly happened during the late Silurian to Lochkovian (Early Devonian) interval. The dipnomorph Youngolepis is the oldest representative of crown Rhipidistia and crown Sarcopterygii, while both Psarolepis and Guiyu are the earliest fossil record of stem Sarcopterygii.
