Depth-dependent ultrafast magnetization dynamics

Schematic view of the ultrafast magnetization dynamics induced by a femtosecond laser pulse within a ferrimagnetic iron-gadolinium (GdFe) heterostructure. The laser-induced demagnetization of the magnetic GdFe layer is enhanced towards the interface with the platinum (Pt) layer underneath, because the Pt absorbs the laser pulse much stronger than the other layers and therefore acts as a localized internal heat source.
