Alveoli in the porous membrane

The porous membrane contains cavities or alveoli which are assumed to shaped by enzymatic activity by exosomes (One-exosome-like body is shown in higher magnification in the inset). Authors believe that these alveoli may increase the sensitivity of the hairs and thereby improve the crocodiles´ hearing.
