Variation characteristics of ground temperature and in situ stress with depth before several strong earthquakes (IMAGE)
Caption
(a) Variation characteristics of ground temperature with depth. The ground temperature gradient of the two boreholes is less than 2°C (100 m)−1. Given the ground temperature measurement results of borehole GQX-1, it can be speculated that the temperature is approximately 217–327°C at depths from 10 to 15 km. (b) Variation characteristics of in situ stress with depth before and after the Wenchuan Earthquake. The SH values of the two boreholes at depths of more than 300 m were greater than those before 2003 and the impending Wenchuan Earthquake. (c) Comparison of variations of SH values before several strong earthquakes. The SH value is the maximum horizontal principal stress, and Sv is the vertical principal stress. E., Earthquake.
