Caption

Due to its strong interaction with light, the WS2 monolayer crystal is visible despite consisting of only a single layer of atoms. Its interaction is so strong that the photons it emits are easily detected in a brightly-lit lab, even at room temperature, as shown by the inset photoluminescence map.
