How a scrubber works (IMAGE)

A scrubber washes exhaust gases from ships using seawater and reduces acidifying sulfur emissions into the air. At the same time, a new emission source is created as the washing water, which is acidified and contains various heavy metals and other toxic substances is released into the sea.
