This plot shows the thickness of the organic coatings on soot particles (y axis) at varying distances from a fire (x axis). Thick coatings accumulate quickly close to the fire, but those coatings thin out as particles move away/age. Conclusion: Soot particles spend most of their lifetime with thinner coatings than current climate models assume.
