Rice University graduate student Lauren Howe-Kerr during a sample collection dive on a “bleached” heat-stressed coral reef at the South Pacific island of Moorea in March 2019. The reef appeared ghostly white following the mass expulsion of photosynthesizing symbiotic algae that provide corals with their characteristic colors.
