Schematic of osteoclastogenesis induced by cholesteatoma fibroblasts expressing activin A. Proinflammatory cytokines secreted from infiltrating macrophages induced activin A-expressing pathogenic fibroblasts; the activin A acted in conjunction with RANKL to promote ectopic osteoclastogenesis.
