Chasing the chameleon: Leopoldina International Virtual Panel discusses the diagnosis and treatment of endometriosis

Worldwide, an estimated ten percent of women of reproductive age are affected by endometriosis, a chronic disease characterised by the growth of endometrium-like tissue outside of the uterus. This leads to symptoms such as severe pain, especially during menstruation, or infertility. Despite its prevalence, endometriosis is often incorrectly diagnosed, and the cause of the disease is still largely unknown. On Thursday 7 March, experts will examine the causes, symptoms, and treatment of endometriosis in an international virtual panel discussion.

The Leopoldina International Virtual Panel provides a platform for exchanging knowledge, ideas, and perspectives on ongoing research efforts. In addition to the latest research findings on the causes and symptoms of endometriosis, the panel will also discuss strategies for diagnosing, treating, and supporting patients from an evidence-based perspective. The Leopoldina will welcome the following experts to the panel discussion.

• Professor Stacey Missmer, Sc.D., Professor of Obstetrics, Gynaecology and Reproductive Biology at Michigan State University in Grand Rapids/USA and Associate Professor of Epidemiology at Harvard TH Chan School of Public Health in Cambridge/USA
• Professor Dr Bettina Toth, Head of the Department of Gynaecological Endocrinology and Reproductive Medicine at the Medical University of Innsbruck in Innsbruck/Austria
• Professor Dr Matthias Beckmann, Member of the Leopoldina, Chair of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at the Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg/Germany and Director of the Endometriosis Center at the University Hospital Erlangen/Germany
• Professor Nicky Hudson, Ph.D., Professor of Medical Sociology, Centre for Reproduction Research, De Montford University in Leicester/UK
