Environmental Engineering Science, a premier peer-reviewed journal dedicated to critical advancements in environmental engineering and science, is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Venkataramana Gadhamshetty, PhD, PE, BCEE, MASCE, as its new Editor-in-ChiefEnvironmental Engineering Science is the official journal of the Association of Environmental Engineering and Science Professors (AEESP).

Dr. Gadhamshetty succeeds Dr. Catherine Peters, Professor at Princeton University, whose many years of dedicated leadership and service have been instrumental in shaping Environmental Engineering Science into the highly respected publication it is today.

Dr. Gadhamshetty, a recognized leader in environmental engineering with nearly 25 years of cumulative experience in the field, brings a distinguished track record in convergence research that integrates fundamental science with real-world environmental challenges. A pioneer in innovative, use-inspired approaches, his work spans critical areas including biofilm science, water and wastewater, water infrastructure, and sustainable materials. As Editor-in-Chief, he aims to expand the journal’s influence across academia, industry, and global sustainability efforts. His extensive expertise, innovative research, and commitment to advancing transdisciplinary research will be pivotal in maintaining the journal’s high standards and expanding its impact.

“Environmental challenges demand bold, inclusive, and transdisciplinary solutions," said Dr. Gadhamshetty. “As a professor, scientist, and entrepreneur, I’m committed to engineering innovation that empowers communities and drives impact. I look forward to shaping the journal as a platform for transformative research, and encouraging contributions that reflect broader impacts, inclusive excellence, pedagogy research, and professional development. Having contributed to AEESP’s Publication Committee for over a decade, I’m honored to continue advancing the journal’s unique role in supporting the society’s mission and inspiring the broader environmental community.”

About Dr. Gadhamshetty
Dr. Gadhamshetty is a Professor of Environmental Engineering at the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology, with over 25 years of cumulative experience spanning research, teaching, industrial initiatives, project management, and entrepreneurship. He is a Board-Certified Environmental Engineer (BCEE) and licensed Professional Engineer (PE) in New York. He holds leadership roles within the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), including Vice Chair of the EWRI Wastewater and Stormwater Council and past Chair of the Water Pollution Engineering Committee. He has also served on the AEESP publication committee for more than a decade. His career includes appointments with multiple institutions, including Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Florida Gulf Coast University, the Air Force Research Laboratory, and DuPont Singapore Pte Ltd.

Research, Innovation, and Impact
Dr. Gadhamshetty’s work integrates cutting-edge research, education, and entrepreneurship to address critical environmental challenges. He has led or co-led research projects totaling nearly $40 million in external funding from agencies including the NSF, DOE, DoD, NASA, EPRI, USGS, and Office of Surface Mining Reclamation and EnforcementHis research focuses on environmental engineering, multi-functional coatings, microbial electrochemical systems, climate-resilient infrastructure, and water reuse technologies. Practical outcomes include infinitesimally thin coatings for corrosion protection, treatment trains for PFAS destruction in ground water, water reuse in power plants, and flowback water reuse in fractured tight shales, and rare earth element extraction from mine wastes, and data-driven tools for bioengineering innovations and sustainable water management.

An NSF CAREER Award recipient and inaugural SD Mines Research Awardee, he is also a TEDx speaker and has been featured in over 350 media outlets including CNN, BBC, and History Now. As co-founder of Biobest LLC, he is advancing scalable environmental biotech solutions for industry and public health. He is also a co-founder of 2D-Materials for Biofilm Engineering, Science, and Technology (2DBEST) center and 2D Materials Laboratory (2DML) at South Dakota School of Mines and Technology.
