The Third Symposium on New Contaminant Control took place in Shanghai in September 2025, bringing together more than 600 researchers, government officials, and industry leaders focused on the rising challenge of new environmental contaminants. The event was jointly organized by the Chinese Society for Environmental Sciences and the Chinese Academy of Environmental Planning.
New contaminants have gained global attention due to their persistent and hazardous nature. Since 2020, they have become a national environmental priority in China. In 2023, the Committee on New Contaminant Control was established to strengthen scientific collaboration and policy support. This year’s symposium marked the third annual gathering and featured its largest participation yet.
The program covered key topics including persistent organic pollutants, endocrine disruptors, antibiotics, microplastics, and major themes such as contaminant identification, monitoring, risk assessment, and co treatment strategies. A highlight of the event was the launch of the journal New Contaminants, which aims to provide a dedicated platform for research on emerging pollutants.
The symposium recognized China’s progress while emphasizing that long term efforts are needed to meet national pollution reduction goals. The event strengthened cooperation, supported scientific innovation, and encouraged the development of practical solutions for environmental protection.
