CLEVELAND – University Hospitals Cleveland Medical Center has once again received the prestigious Magnet designation for nursing excellence from the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC), the largest nursing credentialing body in the nation. This marks the fifth consecutive time the hospital has been given this status. Fewer than 2 percent of the nation’s more than 6,000 hospitals have achieved this honor five times in a row.
ANCC sets standards for nursing excellence through individual certifications and accreditation of organizations to ensure high-quality, safe patient care. Its Magnet Recognition Program® is the highest nursing credential a healthcare organization can achieve. Magnet status indicates that the organization has met the most stringent, evidence-based standards of nursing excellence in patient care delivery.
“For patients, Magnet status confirms that they are receiving care from nurses and healthcare professionals who meet the highest national standards for quality, safety, and expertise,” said Melissa H. Hunt, MSHA, BSN, NEA-BC, Chief Nursing Officer at UH Cleveland Medical Center. “Receiving this designation five consecutive times demonstrates our long-standing commitment to sustained excellence and superior patient outcomes. We are dedicated to the highest standards in professional nursing practice for the benefit of our patients.”
UH Cleveland Medical Center was also awarded several exemplars, which highlight exceptional nursing practice, and that ANCC deems worthy of imitation by other organizations. At UH Cleveland Medical Center, 83 percent of nurses hold a BSN degree or higher, while the national benchmark is 80 percent.
UH Cleveland Medical Center has a history of excellence with the Magnet Recognition Program. It was one of the original 41 hospitals included in the 1983 study by the American Academy of Nursing to identify characteristics of healthcare organizations that excelled in the recruitment and retention of registered nurses. This led the 1990 creation of the Magnet Hospital Recognition Program for Excellence in Nursing Services.
Magnet recognition also validates the strength of UH Cleveland Medical Center’s interprofessional collaboration, dedication to innovation in patient care, and the professional governance model that empowers every team member to contribute to their success. This credential is testament to the countless contributions that nurses, in collaboration with other team members, have made in their commitment to providing quality patient care.
