Due to the ongoing depletion of petroleum reservoirs and the growing global demand for liquid fuels, there is an urgent need to explore alternative energy resources. The production of clean energy from vegetable oil has been studied extensively to reduce environmental pollution and optimize the energy structure. Mo2C, as an effective deoxygenation catalyst, has been used widely in hydrogenation of biomass-based feedstocks to produce biofuel. By tuning the preparation conditions, Ni-Mo2C(25)/MCM-41 catalyst, with the highest amount of active sites, appropriate particle size, and Lewis acid amounts, was synthesized and used in the hydrogenation of jatropha oil. An 83.9% biofuel yield could be obtained after optimizing the reaction conditions. The catalyst also displayed good performance in the conversion of waste cooking oil into high-grade biofuel. This study offers an effective strategy for improving the catalytic performance of molybdenum carbide catalyst in vegetable oil conversion.
