The Child Mind Institute will virtually host its annual On the Shoulders of Giants Scientific Symposium celebrating scientific achievements in child and adolescent psychiatry, psychology, and developmental neuroscience on Tuesday, October 5th from 5 – 8p.m. EST. The symposium will also include a powerful roundtable discussion and will honor a number of high school students from across the U.S. during the 10th Annual Rising Scientist Awards.
On the Shoulders of Giants will include a presentation from the 2021 Child Mind Institute Sarah Gund Prize recipient Dr. Yasmin Hurd, the Ward-Coleman Chair of Translational Neuroscience and the Director of the Addiction Institute at Mount Sinai. Following the presentation, a roundtable, moderated by Deputy Director of the National Institute on Drug Abuse, Dr. Wilson Compton, will explore the impact of marijuana and other substance use on brain function and development in adolescents and offer practical advice for parents. The discussion will also include:
- Dr. Yoko Nomura, Department of Psychology Professor, Queens College, CUNY, and Associate Clinical Professor in the Department of Psychiatry Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai.
- Dr. Jacqueline-Marie Ferland, Postdoctoral researcher at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai.
- Dr. Kevin M. Gray, Associate Professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at Medical University of South Carolina.
- Dr. Leslie A. Hulvershorn, completed an academic track residency in Generaly Psychiatry at the IU School of Medicine, Department of Psychiatry and a two-year research track Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Fellowship at New York University.
- Dr. Christian Thurstone, Director of Service of Behavioral Health Services at Denver Health and professor of psychiatry at the University of Colorado Denver

The 2021 Rising Scientists join prior award winners who have gone to study at some of the nation’s most prestigious institutions. Each winner will receive a $2,000 college scholarship. This year’s winners are:
