Amsterdam, May 22, 2023 – The American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy (AACP), the national organization representing pharmacy education in the United States, and Elsevier, a global leader in information and analytics, are pleased to announce a new partnership to publish the American Journal of Pharmaceutical Education (AJPE), the flagship journal of AACP. The Journal will be hosted on Elsevier’s industry-leading online platform of peer-reviewed literature, ScienceDirect, beginning in May 2023.

“This decision to co-publish with Elsevier was based upon extensive research and discussions focusing on how to best advance and promote research activities of the association, the future scholarly publications of the Journal, and support our AACP individual members and institutions in advancing their scholarly activity,” explained AACP President Russell B. Melchert, PhD, Professor and Dean at the University of Missouri - Kansas City. “This partnership complements the mission and vision of AACP to advance pharmacy education, research, scholarship, practice, and service in conjunction with our members and external stakeholders with the vision of a world of healthy people through the transformation of health professions education.”

Since its founding in 1937, AJPE has been firmly committed to providing the highest quality scholarly content across all facets of pharmacy education, serving the needs of passionate professionals in the United States and abroad who are dedicated to the advancement of pharmacy teaching and learning. It serves as a platform and unifying force for its membership and the broader pharmacy and interprofessional education communities, as well as documenting the proceedings of AACP.

According to AACP Executive Vice President and CEO Lee Vermeulen, MS, FCCP, FFIP, “Our partnership with Elsevier is the next step in our continued journey to publishing outstanding scholarship in teaching and learning across the pharmacy academy. Elsevier brings more than 140 years of supporting the work of research and health partners through its information and global analytics. Authors, reviewers, editors, and our pharmacy academy will benefit from access to enhanced services, leading-edge technologies, and innovative publishing tools offered by Elsevier.”

AJPE continues its tradition of publishing excellence under the expert leadership of Editor Gayle A. Brazeau, PhD, Professor of Pharmaceutical Sciences at the Marshall University (MU) School of Pharmacy, supported by an eminent editorial board. After serving as an associate editor for more than 10 years, Dr. Brazeau became the first woman in the history of the Journal to serve as editor. Under her guidance, the Journal continues to grow and achieve significant milestones.

“The editorial team, editorial board, and AACP leadership and staff remain passionate and committed to timely publishing of only the highest quality scholarly work with this new partnership,” commented Dr. Brazeau. “I have every confidence that support from the Elsevier team will foster even greater success, and we enthusiastically anticipate realizing the Journal’s potential to increase its presence in publishing scholarly educational research work across health professions centered on the goal of promoting scholarship and improving healthcare outcomes.”

The Journal will expand its impact and outreach through availability via the ScienceDirect Freedom Collection, which includes the availability of 15 years of AJPE back volumes (from 2008 onwards). ScienceDirect has 1 billion annual visits and over 17,000 licenses worldwide. Although transitioning to a predominantly subscription-based publication, access will continue to be a benefit of both individual and institutional AACP membership.

Manuscripts will continue to be submitted via Editorial Manager. Accepted manuscripts, on average, will be available within 48 hours in pre-release format.

“We are delighted that AACP has selected Elsevier as its partner, and we are proud to publish this journal that holds a leadership position in its field, focusing on the scholarship of teaching and learning for current and future pharmacists. It is an excellent complement to the Elsevier journal portfolio, which has a strong presence in the pharmacology and pharmacy space as well as in education and educational research,” stated Louise Curtis, Elsevier Senior Vice President. “We are committed to providing the best possible support for AACP’s mission and community and strengthening the Journal by enabling researchers, educators, and healthcare professionals to advance science and improve healthcare outcomes for the benefit of society.
