Time-restricted eating provides modest weight loss benefits for adults with obesity and prediabetes

A Johns Hopkins Medicine study reports evidence that time-restricted eating (TRE) — a form of intermittent fasting that involves only eating during a consistent, daily 8- to 10-hour window — can cause modest weight loss in adults with both obesity and prediabetes or those with diet-controlled type 2 diabetes.

Neuroprosthesis for paralysis enables simultaneous speech and body language

An NIH-funded scientific team has shown that a new brain-computer interface (BCI) can allow people with vocal tract and bodily paralysis to convey both speech and upper-body gestures simultaneously. While BCIs have facilitated one or the other in the past, this new system is the first to enable both modes of communication at once, more closely replicating natural expression.

Study: Young military veterans have higher ‘forever chemical’ levels than non-veterans

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), often called forever chemicals because of their long-lasting presence in humans and the environment, are commonly found in consumer and industrial products. When Brown University researchers examined PFAS levels in the blood serum of United States military veterans, they found that younger veterans had higher PFAS concentrations and a higher prevalence of elevated PFAS compared with civilians of similar ages.

Twins’ research helps advance bioengineering project

Twin brothers Adam and Amine Azizi helped to develop experimental techniques that provided crucial data for University of Texas at Dallas researcher Dr. Shashank Sirsi to secure a $2 million National Institutes of Health grant (1RO1EB039167). The goal of the project is to develop an ultrasound-based contrast agent that could allow doctors to monitor oxygen levels continuously in the brains of newborns with hypoxic brain injury, a condition caused by oxygen deprivation before, during or after birth.
