Researchers at the Department of Energy’s (DOE) Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory (PPPL) are using artificial intelligence to perfect the design of the vessels surrounding the super-hot plasma, optimize heating methods and maintain stable control of the reaction for increasingly long periods. A new paper published in Nature Communications demonstrates PPPL's expertise in this area. The paper explains how the researcher team used machine learning to avoid magnetic perturbations, or disruptions, which destabilize fusion plasma.

DOE lands top two spots on list of fastest supercomputers

The U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) Aurora supercomputer has officially broken the exascale barrier. Today at the 2024 ISC High Performance conference in Hamburg, Germany, the 63^rd edition of the high performance computing Top500 list announced that DOE holds the #1 and #2 positions for most powerful supercomputers in the world. The Top500’s benchmark has long been the world’s measuring stick for large scale supercomputing performance.

Oppenheimer fellows to gain broader view of national labs

Two physicists at Jefferson Lab have been selected as fellows for the distinguished Oppenheimer Science and Energy Leadership Program (OSELP), considered the highest honor for leadership training among national labs. Douglas Higinbotham, operations director for the lab’s physics division, and Mike Spata, deputy associate director of accelerator operations and research and development, have joined 29 other individuals from 17 national laboratories across the country as the 2024 cohort of the program designed to cultivate and retain talented leaders.

For sustainable aviation fuel, researchers engineer a promising microorganism for precursor production

Researchers used advanced computing techniques to engineer the bacteria Pseudomonas putida to optimize its production of isoprenol using carbon from plant material. Isoprenol has a potential role in the production of jet biofuel blendstocks. This work is therefore a step toward sustainable jet fuel production, which could help control carbon dioxide emissions and climate change.
