Through its diverse portfolio, including its system of laboratory and university programs, DOE promotes interdisciplinary research and the integration of basic and applied science.
Investigators in these programs are working to understand how living organisms interact with and respond to their environments. This research will help tackle challenges focused on the DOE mission including how biological processes can produce clean energy, remove excess carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, and assist in environmental cleanup.
