Engineering strategies to enhance the targeting specificity of mitochondrial delivery. (IMAGE)

Schematic overview of representative strategies for improving the specificity of mitochondrial transfer. Donor cell-derived vesicles may display cell source- and dose- dependent membrane properties, thereby influencing their interaction with recipient cells and contributing to selective mitochondrial delivery. In addition, the MitoCatch system enables programmable cell-type-targeted mitochondrial transplantation by establishing engineered recognition between donor mitochondria and recipient cell membranes. Different MitoCatch modules, including MitoCatch-C, MitoCatch-Bi, and MitoCatch-M, provide modular interfaces that link mitochondria to defined target cells. These strategies aim to improve delivery specificity, reduce nonspecific mitochondrial uptake, and promote precise mitochondrial transplantation into disease-relevant recipient cell populations.
