シロアリはゴキブリの一種で、約1億5,000万～1億7,000万年前に姉妹群のゴキブリから分岐したとされる。従来の研究では、シロアリは分岐後、徐々に小型化していったと考えられていたが、今回の研究では、この説は裏付けられなかった。
