New validated scale measures marital happiness in the Omani context

Sultan Qaboos University

A new study introduces a validated tool for measuring marital happiness within the Omani context. Researchers evaluated the psychometric properties of the Marital Happiness Scale using Rasch analysis, a statistical method widely used to assess the validity and reliability of survey instruments. The analysis examined whether the scale accurately captures marital satisfaction and whether its items function consistently across different groups.

Results showed that the scale measures marital happiness as a single underlying construct and demonstrates strong reliability. Most items performed well statistically, indicating that the instrument can effectively distinguish between different levels of marital happiness among Omani married couples.

The researchers also examined differential item functioning (DIF) to determine whether men and women responded differently to the survey items. Findings indicated that most items functioned consistently across genders, although minor variations were observed in a small number of items.

The validated scale provides researchers and practitioners with a reliable instrument for assessing marital wellbeing and understanding family dynamics. Such measurement tools are essential for advancing research on relationship satisfaction, social wellbeing, and family stability.

Beyond its application in Oman, the findings may also support research in other regions where culturally appropriate instruments for measuring marital happiness remain limited. The scale could therefore facilitate comparative studies and contribute to a broader understanding of marital wellbeing across different cultural contexts.
