A research team from Tiangong University has published a systematic practice-oriented review in Science Bulletin, establishing a unified semi-quantitative industrial evaluation framework covering eight core dimensions for lithium-ion battery prelithiation technologies. The framework enables objective head-to-head comparison of eight representative prelithiation strategies, provides a scenario-specific decision matrix for five typical application scenarios, and distills five universal design rules for next-generation solutions, closing the long-standing gap between laboratory innovation and large-scale battery manufacturing.
Replacing petroleum-based synthetic fibers with sustainable bio-derived materials is critical to curbing global microplastic pollution, but biomass fibers have long been limited by insufficient mechanical performance. Researchers from Anhui Agricultural University and Zhejiang University developed high-performance cellulose metafibers (Meta-CFs) using a scalable hydrodynamic twisting strategy. By guiding continuously twisted structures on chemically cross-linked cellulose networks via an asymmetric microfluidic field, the team achieved a record tensile strength of 3.29 GPa and a toughness of 349.5 MJ m–3—rivaling both high-performance synthetic fibers and natural spider silk. The fibers can be scaled into bundles while retaining GPa-level strength, are fully biodegradable, and have been validated as durable trimmer lines that eliminate persistent agricultural microplastic residues.
A modelling study finds that banks form interbank networks by balancing the benefits of sharing liquidity risk against incentives to rely on other banks' reserves. As networks grow, risk-sharing can initially improve expected profits, but free-riding can later reduce them. The findings suggest that relatively small networks may be most efficient and offer insights into “too-big-to-fail” and “too-interconnected-to-fail” risks.
A dual-functional BSB-Me single-crystalline layer simultaneously serves as a stable hole-transporting layer and an efficient moisture/oxygen permeation barrier layer for organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs). The approach yields record-high efficiencies among single-crystal OLEDs and extends the operational lifetime of blue OLEDs by more than 30 times relative to conventional amorphous counterparts.
Foliar application of ZnO nanoparticles at booting outperforms ZnSO₄ in direct-seeded rice, simultaneously raising polished grain Zn, spikelets per panicle and 1000-grain weight while lowering amylose and chalkiness. Transcriptomics links these gains to upregulated α-amylase genes (OsAmy1C, OsRAmy1A) and suppressed cytokinin-degrading OsCKX2, revealing a nano-specific transcriptional rewiring that breaks the yield–quality trade-off.
Doctors who carry out ethnographic research in hospitals occupy an unusual position: they are both clinicians and researchers. Their medical knowledge and professional authority can affect what people say to them, how staff behave around them, and what they are able to observe. Drawing on fieldwork in acute hospital settings, physician-researcher David Wenzel reflects on moments when he was treated as a doctor, a student, or something in between. He found that these different positions made different aspects of clinical care visible. When staff recognized him as a physician, conversations often became more technical. When he was treated as a student or outsider, staff were more likely to discuss uncertainty, emotions, and the less visible relational work of care. The article argues that a clinician's professional identity should not simply be treated as a source of bias to eliminate. Instead, careful reflection on how that identity shapes interactions can itself become a source of insight into hierarchy, responsibility, and decision-making in healthcare.
Chikungunya virus (CHIKV) infection lacks widely available antiviral therapies. In this study, researchers established a CHIKV replicon particle-based high-content screening platform and identified three antiviral compounds, MDL-12330A, bazedoxifene acetate, and anidulafungin. These compounds displayed distinct antiviral profiles by targeting different stages of the CHIKV life cycle, providing new insights into host–virus interactions and potential antiviral strategies.
